Smith to donate Stevens' contributions to charity
By Britten Chase, PolitickerOR.com ReporterU.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) will give the money donated to his campaign by U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) to charity, according to Smith campaign spokeswoman Lindsay Gilbride. Gilbride did not elaborate as to which charity the money would go to.
Stevens was indicted by a federal grand jury in Washington Tuesday on seven charges, alleging he concealed hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of gifts and home renovations from VECO Corp., an Alaskan oil company.
Smith had been a previous beneficiary of funds from Stevens' Northern Lights PAC, and has received a total of $39,000 in campaign contributions from the PAC over his political career. In an exclusive interview with PolitickerOR, Smith's rival House Speaker and U.S. Senate candidate Jeff Merkley (D-Portland) did not fault Smith for not knowing the money he received could be suspect. As far as which charity the money should go to, Merkley offered a suggestion.
“These donations are tainted,” Merkley said. “It doesn’t make much sense to give this money back to Stevens. But he can give it to kids and to families that struggle without good quality healthcare.”
