OR-5: Blumenauer touts Schrader's lead: ‘Make sure he's up 10 to 15 percent over that weasel’

U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer touted the strength of state Sen. Kurt Schrader’s (D-Canby) congressional campaign Monday by saying Schrader had a strong lead over Mike Erickson (R-Lake Oswego).

“Kurt has to have a strong enough lead; We need to make sure he's up 10 to 15 percent over that weasel,” Blumenauer said in reference to Erickson, who has run into some recent controversies, including accusations of stirring up trouble at county fairs, as well as being accused of misrepresenting the purpose of a humanitarian trip to Cuba. “Then he can be out there with me in other parts of the state.”

Blumenauer also took the time to compliment Oregon House Speaker Jeff Merkley (D-Portland), who is in the midst of one of the most hotly contested senate races in the country against U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton).

“A person with as big a heart as he has is turning out to be a scrappy campaigner,” Blumenauer said.
