Progressive robocaller Moses Ross said Thursday that the outcome of the 5th Congressional District race was probably not going to be impacted by a national organization targeting state Sen. Kurt Schrader (D-Canby) because Mike Erickson (R-Lake Oswego) was having trouble building momentum in his campaign.
“It’s just not going to affect the race because Erickson is such a poor candidate,” Ross said.
The group, Freedom’s Watch, has targeted Schrader, as well as other congressional candidates around the country, by placing automatic calls to residents in the district which warn them that Schrader had worked in the State Senate for a tax on gasoline.
Ross, who is based in Portland with PoliticalRobocalls.com, warned that robocalls, if not monitored can have a dramatic affect on the strength of the candidate.
“It’s kind of like chiseling at the foundation of a statue,” Ross said. “They can afford to ignore the calls right now, but after a while, the calls will chip away at the foundation of the candidate."
Ross also said that the robocalls could only do so much. When asked what he would do if he was in Schrader’s situation, Ross was pretty succinct.
“Nothing,” he said.

Robocalls are illegal in OR / Do not work
With all due respect for Mr. Ross, the evidence clearly shows that robo calls do not work. In fact, the only legitimate third party data on robo calls (Green and Gerber, YALE) shows that robo calls "have a perfect record for never having worked".
Also, in OR, robo calls are essentially illegal unless they are scrubbed against the do not call registry - which they mostly are not. This is a new law, just implemented in 2008.
