A spokesman for House Republican leader Bruce Hanna is accusing House District 26 candidate Jessica Adamson (D-Sherwood) of trying to distract voters from important issues by calling attention to Rep. Matt Wingard’s (D-Wilsonville) 2002 misdemeanor assault conviction for hitting his son over the head with a screwdriver.
The misdemeanor was brought to light in a mailing that was sent out to HD-26 voters on Monday.
“Jessica Adamson is engaging in muckracking attacks,” spokesman Nick Smith said. “There’s no discussion on issues that are important in the district. She has nothing to offer voters.”
The mailing was not however sent out by the Adamson campaign, but by Oregon House Democrats’ FuturePAC. The Oregonian published documents on Tuesday that detailed other abuses, separate from the screwdriver incident. Smith refused to comment on the Wingard's relationship with his family, but did say that it was being used to distract HD-26 voters from focusing on problems in Oregon, such as rising unemployment and a potential budget shortfall.
“The information that was printed in The Oregonian were personal issues,” Smith said. “The way we see it is Adamson’s attacks are only serving to distract from the issues.”
Calls to Adamson were not immediately returned.

Muckraking bad?
Isn't muckraking a good thing? Haven't great works of muckraking (Eg. Sinclair's "The Jungle" and Nader's "Unsafe at Any Speed") uncovered great tragedies and corruption? Maybe Nick Smith should have chosen a different line of attack. Sounds like there's plenty of muck to be raked in Wingard's case, and I'm glad somebody out there is providing this public service.
Screwdriver attention
It's too bad that Wingard can't admit to his poor behavior. I'm sure that Adamson enjoys seeing his name in the same sentence as "hitting his son over the head with a screwdriver" even if the Republicans are unfairly labeling her as a muckraker.
Matt Wingard "hitting his son over the head with a screwdriver".
