U.S Senate candidate Jeff Merkley (D-Portland) out raised U.S. Sen.Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) during the third fundraising quarter, but the incumbent senator maintained a large cash-on-hand advantage, according to campaign finance reports from the Federal Election Commission.
Smith raised $1,870,339.24 during the third quarter, which spanned July 1 to Sept. 30. That is $237,929.49 short of Merkley, who raised $2,108,268.73.
Smith still has the edge in the cash on hand category. According to the FEC, Smith’s war chest stands at $1,503,232.18. He has almost a2-1 advantage over the Oregon House Speaker, who has $766,213.66 cash on hand.
