Merkley camp calls on Smith to sever ties with robocall firm
By Britten Chase, PolitickerOR.com ReporterDemocratic Senate candidate Jeff Merkley’s campaign issued an “urgent action alert” to its supporters on Sunday after it discovered that U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith’s campaign has made payments to the company responsible for robocalls in several swing states that attack Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.
The campaign said it is on high alert after it discovered that Smith’s campaign had made payments to the company Feather, Larson, and Synhorst DCI for “telemarketing” purposes.
The Smith campaign confirmed it did hire the firm but said the payments were only to place fundraising calls to supporters. The Smith campaign has made four payments to FLS-DCI; the most recent one was over three months ago.
"Misleading robocalls have no place in this campaign," Smith spokeswoman Lindsay Gilbride said.
Regardless of what the purpose of the payments, Merkley’s campaign issued its warning to tens of thousands of supporters, telling them to be on the lookout for any suspicious phone calls. Merkley campaign manager Jon Isaacs also called on Smith to sever ties with the company.
Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Norm Coleman (R-Minn.) have condemned robocalls in their respective states on behalf of Republican presidential candidate John McCain. In the calls, they accuse Obama of associating with terrorists.
Because of Smith’s past payments, Merkley spokesman Matt Canter said it wasn’t just enough for Smith to follow his Republican colleagues in denouncing McCain’s tactics.
“Unlike Susan Collins, Gordon Smith employs these people,” Canter said. “He is guilty of working with these same people launching these attacks. If he disapproves of these tactics, as other Republicans have, then he should do the right thing and sever ties.”
According to an ABC report, FLS-DCI is known for a robocall campaign against McCain during his presidential bid in 2000, when the firm called South Carolina voters and suggested McCain fathered an illegitimate African American child.

Merkley Should Sever Ties with Big Labor Bosses
Interesting that Jeff Merkley wants Senator Gordon Smith to sever ties with an organization that is making calls attacking Barack Obama. Especially since Merkley won't sever ties with Big Labor Unions and Bosses who fund his campaign and robocalls against Smith in exchange for his vote on the grossly mis-named Employee Free Choice Act.
Jeff Merkley and the Unions want to take away the fundamental right of workers to have a private ballot and he is accusing Smith of making "suspicious" calls. Stop worrying about yourself Jeff and for a change, worry about the citizens of Oregon you were elected to protect and serve instead of special interests like Big Labor Unions.

Obama is bad, inside he hurts what the white people told him while he was growing like a mix race kid. He is not even bi racial. It took him years to find out who he was and the more he understood the more he hated. He is still a dark pigment man with white heart and eastern foundations. He has fought with himself to take Barry out of him. Who you are is not a product of biology but early education.Is on his book. He could only come to an understanding of who he really was after he started to study BLT. Until then he was socialist inclined. While in Indonesia he did not ran the streets with an American flag or a bible.
Chose someone for VP that the own democrats could not vote for. You are choosing a man that used drugs even when you criticized Clinton for lighting and not inhaling. The US is not ready for socialism. We do not produce enough to be the poor in debt country the world is trying to make us. China will own us soon if we do not elect someone that can run small government and will free entrepreneurs to have business that will produce jobs. If you tax them if they earn more than $250K they will stay small or work with cash. When you work wit cash the mafia comes back and black markets strive.
