Research 2000 poll: Merkley 48, Smith 42

A poll released on Saturday shows U.S. Senate candidate Jeff Merkley (D-Portland) with a six-point lead over U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton).

The poll, conducted by Research 2000, says Merkley has 48 percent of voters backing him, while Smith has 42 percent. Five percent of voters said they were opting for a different candidate, and another five percent were undecided.

The result of this poll falls right in the middle of two other polls released Friday. One, conducted by Public Policy Polling, showed Merkley with an eight point edge in the race. Another, released by Rasmussen, showed Merkley with a three point lead.

The poll was conducted by surveying 600 likely Oregon voters between Oct. 27 and Oct. 29. It has a margin of error of +/- 4 percent.
