Smith takes lead in the Senate race

U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) took the lead in Oregon’s Senate race as elections officials continued to count ballots throughout the night.

As of Wednesday morning, Smith had received 48 percent of the vote to U.S. Senate candidate Jeff Merkley’s (D-Portland) 47 percent, with 58 percent of votes counted.

Both campaigns have said they expect there will not be a result until later in the day.
