Sean Cruz claims he can win a State Senate seat for less than $50,000.
His campaign in unconventional, based on his previous experience in technology and in the Legislature as a staff member for current Sen. Gordly (D), who he hopes to succeed as the Senator in District 23.
“She was never the establishment candidate, and neither am I,” he said.
Cruz believes he can’t beat his opponent, Jackie Dingfelder, in the Democratic primary by campaigning harder; instead he plans to harness the internet to reach voters. He doesn’t believe in direct mail, and he holds his ‘office hours’ at Tupelo Joe’s, a BBQ joint.
He announced today that David Linn, a Portland native, is joining him as campaign manager, but does not plan to open an ‘official’ field office.
Cruz is passionate about veterans’ affairs and health care, basically running in order to serve on the Senate’s Health and Human Services Committee.
Cruz, who had two sons that served in Iraq, is also vocal about his concern for the plight of Oregon’s military families.
“I was a Vietnam War protestor, back then bodies were coming home to everybody’s neighborhood, but that’s not the case here,” Cruz said. “I’ve been fighting to get the issue of the war to the Oregon Legislature floor for five years.”
“It is very personal. Seven years ago I was homeless, and to go from that to a Senate seat in that time is amazing,” he said.
