The Republican Party of Oregon jabbed at state House Speaker Jeff Merkley’s (D- Portland) record on oil and energy policy, an issue on which the Democrat has tried to take the initiative.
A press release stated: “While Jeff Merkley’s out-of state special interest allies attack Gordon Smith, they – oops – fail to remember the Portland Democrat’s record of voting to increase the cost of gasoline, diesel, and airline fuel as a state legislator while taking campaign cash from oil companies, gas companies, auto-makers, and their lobbyists.”
The statement claims that “As a legislator, Merkley has also taken more than $12,000 in campaign contributions from oil, gas, and auto corporations and their lobbyists. (followthemoney.org, FEC reports).”
In an email to PolitickerOR.com, Matt Cantor , Merkley’s spokesperson countered by saying the press release was a “failed attempt by Smith to distract from his record delivering giveaways for big oil and opposing higher fuel efficiency standards.”

There is an alternative to these two compromised big box candidates: Dave Brownlow, the Constitution Party candidate. Why vote for these politics-as-usual types when there's someone running who would work to put an end to these incestuous corporate relationships? Brownlow wants to represent you, not big oil.
