The field of candidates looking to secure the Democratic nomination for secretary of state has narrowed to two frontrunners, according to a poll commissioned by the Portland Tribune and FOX News 12.
State Sens. Kate Brown (D-Southeast Portland) and Rick Metsger (D-Welches) have each garnered 25 percent of Democratic voters, while state Sen. Vicki Walker (D-Eugene) heads into the race's final week with 14 percent.
To break the deadlock, Brown and Metsger will have to win over the 36 percent of Democratic voters that remain undecided.
Mark Hibbitts of Davis, Hibbitts & Midghall Inc., the firm that conducted the poll, says the large number of undecided voters is due to poor statewide name recognition among the candidates. "It's not a surprise that it takes voters a while to make up their mind," Hibbitts told the Tribune. "Huge numbers of people don't know anything about them."
