GOP confident in picking up Hooley seat

Republicans involved in the District 5 race see Hooley’s retirement as a clear opportunity.

“The race was going to be competitive before Darlene Hooley’s retirement and it is going to be competitive now,” said NRCC spokesman Ken Spain.

“The retirement is a testament to the candidacy of Mike Erickson, who will be in a strong position given his strong record as a businessman and as a strong campaigner.”

Republicans believe that Erickson is in a position to win the seat. They point out that Erickson, who ran for the seat in 2006, has developed name recognition in the district. They point out that Erickson has shown a willingness to spend his own money – in 2006 he spent over $1.5 million from his pocket. And they believe that the district’s leanings could favor the GOP come November.
