Hooley’s announcement this morning has reverberated both in Washington DC and here in Oregon, spurring debate about the repercussions of her decision for the balance of power in both state and national politics.
Her decision has also prompted a tide of well-wishers on both sides of the aisle.
“Darlene is a tireless advocate for her district and a respected leader with whom I have enjoyed working and for whom I hold admiration and affection. I wish her every good thing,” said Sen. Gordon Smith (R-OR).Bi-partisan approbation aside, discussion has raged all day over the likelihood of this decision inspiriting the GOP in Oregon.“Having an open congressional seat is always exciting, so it is very likely this will invigorate GOP party,” said Brianne Hyder, Oregon GOP spokeswoman said.The Oregon Democratic Party is, however, dedicated to fighting to retain Congressional District 5.
“Democrats are committed to retaining this seat and bringing change to Washington, DC. The Republican brand stands for keeping American troops in Iraq, continuing President Bush’s irresponsible fiscal policies and obstructing change. That’s not going to win them the support of the fifth district,” said DPO Chair Meredith Wood Smith.
