The race for State Treasurer—between a former Republican turned Democrat (state Senator Ben Westlund) and a Republican who was a Deputy Chief of Staff in the Democratic Governor’s office (Allen Alley)—might at first appear, well, confusing, on the partisan level.
But lest voters forget who Alley’s former boss, Governor Ted Kulongoski, stands behind, a recent fundraising letter should remind them.
“The Republicans recruited a candidate who can afford to write his own checks,” Kulongoski wrote, a reference to the wealthy businessman’s ability to self-fund should have to.
According to ORESTAR, while Alley has not contributed to his own campaign as of yet, his wife has.
Deborah Alley was the first to donate to her husband—a $5,000 cash contribution—and followed up the initial donation with a $25,000 non-exempt campaign loan.
Kulongoski also touted Westlund’s personal and legislative assets in the letter.
“Ben Westlund will always do what’s right for Oregon no matter how controversial or challenging,” the Governor wrote.
