Novick is the only candidate
Novick is the only candidate who can beat Smith. Merkley is too much like Al Gore - he won't excite the base and won't rip apart and expoose Smith for what he really is.
Problem is
Novick likes to get distracted and rip into his fellow Democrats, too. He's attacked:
Obama
Clinton
Hooley
Richardson
Gore
He can't seem to focus his destructive beam on one person.
Merkley will take down Gordon Smith by building a coalition, not by criticizing his friends.
Really?
The poll wasn't "Who would make a better senator?"
The poll is "Who would be the stronger Democrat to run against Republican U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith?"
Given Novick's, shall we say, "overly progressive" views I don't see how any Republican will cross over to vote for him in Nov. Also I see difficulty in Novick gathering the support of Indepedents.
elections aren't always about left and right
They are often about plain talk vs. obfuscation, perceived honesty vs. perceived pandering, etc.
Novick may be progressive, but he's a straight shooter, and even if you disagree with him on some key issues (as I do) you know where he stands and you feel you can trust him. I don't know if Merkley has any core beliefs other than that he would like to be a Senator.
