What was expected to be a sleepy primary campaign season, but for the somewhat elevated Attorney General and Secretary of State campaigns, now has been rattled into the national spotlight. Darlene Hooley 's exit from the 5th CD has both Democrats and Republicans scrambling for competitive candidates. So, the million dollar question now is who will run on either side.
On the Democratic side:
First, we have the popular Clackamas County Commissioner Martha Schrader who has already declared her interest in replacing Hooley. Her entry could bring in support from the fundraising powerhouse EMILY's List which would mean considerable money in what will be a short primary season. Schrader is a tough competitor and her entry against two or more men could mean that a woman maintains control of this district.
The one candidate with his hand already in the primary pot is losing state senate candidate Paul Evans, who is married to Hooley's COS Joan Evans. He may have lost credibility within certain Democratic circles because he leaked the Hooley story too soon.
Attorney General candidate Greg Macpherson currently lives in the district, but sources indicate he is not interested in the job.
On the Republican side:
No question millionaire businessman Mike Erickson will put his current campaign into full gear. It appears that the Oregon GOP will be standing by their man and do what they can to prevent other candidates from entering the race.
