No more cozy relationship between Wyden and Smith

Incumbent Republican Senator Gordon Smith repeatedly ran a television ad this month bragging of his close relationship with Democratic colleague Senator Ron Wyden, much to the dismay of both Wyden and Smith's opponent Jeff Merkley.  Well, speculation is now rampant that the strong relationship between the Smith and Wyden offices has disintegrated and the warm and fuzzy joint town halls they are both famous for are likely history no matter what the outcome in six days.

Smith ups the ante in the television ad wars

It was only a matter of time until incumbent Republican Senator Gordon Smith pulled out the Matthew Shepard ad in his race against Democrat Jeff Merkley.  Shepard was an openly gay student at the University of Wyoming who was kidnapped and murdered in 1998 by two youths who opposed Shepard's sexuality.

US Senate debate schedule is thin

There are only two scheduled US Senate debates between Democrat Jeff Merkley and incumbent Republican Gordon Smith in the next five weeks.  The first will take place on October 9 on KGW and the second on October 13 on KOBI.  The Merkley camp committed to more debates but Smith's team refused.  Smith agreed to an impromptu debate on September 19, but Merkley refused.  In the brief two debates watched by Oregon voters let's hope they leave the hot dogs and golf clubs at home.

Bidding wars start for a potential Merkley senate staff

Apparently, several Democratic political insiders are starting to feel a bit more comfortable about a potential win for challenger Jeff Merkley in his bid to unseat incumbent Republican Gordon Smith.  One campaign staffer recently remarked on his disgust on how several of his colleagues on the campaign and a few close financial supporters are starting to lobby for government staff positions that have yet to exist.
