New kid Brownlow might help Smith

As Jeff Mapes reports, there's a new kid in town. Dave Brownlow obtained the Constitution Party nomination for US Senate over this past weekend, sparking debate on whether his candidacy will help or hurt incumbent Senator Gordon Smith in his bid for re-election. Brownlow claims no difference exists between Smith and Democratic challenger Jeff Merkley, stating they both support "various degrees of big government." Maybe, in a Democratic run state with a dwindling Republican party, that is exactly what Smith is hoping for. Some insiders are speculating that in light of Smith's repeated television ads touting his bipartisanship, perhaps he might welcome an ultraconservative to the race who could make Smith more appealing to moderate and independent voters.

Uh, sure, because without Brownlow, those ultraconservatives

were going to vote for Merkley?

That's the most ridiculous spin imaginable. Those are Smith voters who will be peeled off, plain and simple.

And did you read Mapes' post? Brownlow is no conservative diehard, he'll be attacking Smith for supporting the war in Iraq, which is something Smith hopes voters forget. This is headache in the making for Smith, not Merkley.
