Last week Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian picked up $65,000 at a Mother's Bistro fundraiser for his fall campaign against the relatively unknown and unseasoned Pavel Goberman. Avakian started the election season out running for Secretary of State, but when Dan Gardner vacated his spot as Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor and Industries, Avakian left the hotly contested Democratic primary when the governor appointed him to the vacancy. So far this year Avakian has raised $143,468 with $64,744 in his bank account, while Goberman has neither raised nor loaned his campaign a dime. With only token opposition, many are starting to wonder whether Avakian is raising money to run a serious campaign this fall or if he is building his warchest for a run for higher office in 2010.
Mark Welczko, a losing primary challenger to U.S. Rep. David Wu earlier this year, has declared his intention to join the race for Labor Commissioner against incumbent Brad Avakian. >

Goberman? Unseasoned? How do
Goberman? Unseasoned? How do ya figure? He's run for every office in the state, as a Democrat and a Republican!
Avakian 2010
With these impressive fundraising figures, it would not surprise me if Avakian takes it to Salem in 2010. Last I saw, he was pumping iron and ready to run laps around potential challengers.
