Oregon delegates may proclaim their newfound love for Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, but will she ever visit Oregon before November 4?
The reelection campaign for US Senator Gordon Smith has made it abundantly clear they want nothing to do with their own political party (for the next few months anyway). Smith's television ads tout his oppostion to the Iraq war and his work with Democrats in Congress. He also excused himself from the Republican National Convention to campaign for his reelection despite liberal bloggers continuing to question whether Smith has made any recent public appearances or he just wanted to stay away from his tainted party. Additionally, Smith refuses to endorse fifth congressional district candidate Mike Erickson given the many political stumbling blocks Erickson has encountered throughout his campaign.
Issues regarding Palin's tenure as Governor of Alaska continue to surface causing GOP nerves to fray, thus prompting all Oregon pols to wonder whether Palin will see the light of day in the Beaver state. Republican presidential nominee John McCain has made a few low-profile appearances in Oregon despite Smith being on McCain's inner "kitchen cabinet." Some insiders think, as a Governor from the Pacific Northwest Palin will be welcomed by Oregonians with open arms. Others see Smith continuing the avoidance game by asking the McCain/Palin campaign to skip the state altogether this election season. They have a mere 61 days to figure it out.
