Marquis not favored for US Attorney spot

The latest speculation on who will be Oregon's next U.S. Attorney once President-Elect Barack Obama takes office is that several Oregon district attorneys are lining up behind Clatsop DA Josh Marquis for the job.  As reported by PolitickerOR.com, Marquis expressed interest in wanting to make the short list of recommendations by U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, but said he was not waiting on the edge of his seat for any potential appointment.  Additionally, Marquis received support from Klamath County DA Ed Caleb and Deschutes County DA Mike Dugan, who both declined any interest themselves.  However, there are a few influential Democrats out there who are completely opposed to the idea of a Marquis appointment and have made it clear he will not be nominated.

One source states, "As it is we are trying to recover from an extreme right-wing administration.  Given Marquis' own extremely conservative record, he has no business applying for the job."  Another insider stated "over my dead body" will he be nominated.  Marquis raised some controversy in the past when he tried to restore his salary to what it was prior to it being cut by his own fellow Clatsop County Commissioners.  Democrats are also not in love with the idea of nominating someone who favors the death penalty and has gone on the record in a New York Times op-ed piece claiming "Americans should be far more worried about the wrongfully freed than the wrongfully convicted."

Gee, an anonymous pseudonym quoting anonymous sources.
I guess Marquis' work for Kitzhaber, Kulongoski, Brown, Wu, Wyden, and a plethora of other Democrats make him an "extreme right winger."
Sorry folks, but President-elect Obama supports the death penalty as well. When Democrats in Oregon have wanted the support of law enforcement they have gone to Marquis.
The only influential Democrats who matter are Senators Wyden and Merkley, the Attorney General-designate, and the President. Any of them call Politicker?

Marquis not favored

Are those folks who don't favor Marquis for the US Attorney's job the same Portland liberals who have been living in a time warp for the past three decades? Obama is moving the Democratic Party to the center, where Marquis has always been. He is not, and never has been, a right-winger. He is a realist who has genuine sympathy for victims and understands that most victims are poor and vulnerable. It isn't the criminal who has been voiceless (they've always had the left wing of the Democratic Party speaking for them).

Disappointed

It is one thing to have anonymous blogs, but quite another to have an anonymous author who quotes two anonymous sources in an article. Lame...

Marquis not favored for US Attorney spot

I will not dignify the quote from an "anonymous insider" who says "over my dead body" Marquis will be nominated, but will address the quote "As it is we are trying to recover from an extreme right-wing administration. Given Marquis' own extremely conservative record, he has no business applying for the job." As a former resident of Clatsop County, my observation of Marquis was a DA who fought hard for victims rights, DUII, animal welfare, truth in sentencing, and corporate and environmental prosecutions. "Extreme right-wing"? If this anonymous source fails to give an example of what position he or she is characterizing as "right wing," it amounts to little more than baseless name calling.

Marquis not favored, unsuited for US Attorney

Josh Marquis' wife, Cynthia Price, posted the following comment to a member of the Tillicum Board (a non-profit organization for community radio), "You have a privilege guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States to misrepresent the truth almost as much as you want, to as many people as you want, and I will continue to do everything in my power to ensure that right is respected." How comforting is it to know that our local DA shares this opinion of how the truth is to be (mis)represented to the citizens? How comforting would it be to know that Oregon's US Attorney had the opinion that misrepresenting the truth is a constitutional privilege?
