Walton will chair Metsger campaign
By Doug DanielsIn an interesting move, State Sen. Rick Metsger announced Wednesday that former NBA star Bill Walton has signed on to chair his Secretary of State campaign. Walton is a sports broadcaster, and former Trailblazer, and also travels around the country as a motivational speaker.
Metsger’s hope is to encourage broader participation in politics, and said in a statement that Walton is a figure who can generate interest among people who typically are not politically active.
“I have known Rick for over 30 years and he is the right person to help lead Oregon forward and preserve the very special qualities of the state I dearly love,” Walton said in a statement. “Sports and politics share many similarities. True winners are those who can inspire and lead others to be there very best. Rick is that kind of leader,” he added.
