Losers

Jeff Merkley

Oregon’s Speaker of the House ousts a two-year incumbent US Senator after a tough battle and a narrow victory. It’s all smiles in the Merkley camp this week.

Oregon House Republicans

No surprise here. They lost five seats and are in a super-minority this coming legislative session. They are lucky that loss didn’t go any higher.

Dave Hunt

Oregon’s future Speaker of the House orchestrated some of the best campaign efforts yet seen in the Beaver State by picking up five new seats to gain a supermajority for Oregon House Democrats.

Linda Flores

She ran a terrible campaign for re-election, ultimately losing to a liberal political newcomer in a traditionally conservative state representative district.

Gordon Smith

He lost the toughest race of his political career, but he did so with honor and dignity. Something tells us we will see him on the campaign trail again soon.

Bill Sizemore

He lost all the ballot measures he forced on Oregon voters and yet he still has plans for more in 2010. When will this man’s swan song begin to play?

Kurt Schrader

Picking up the reins where Democratic Rep. Darlene Hooley left off, the outgoing state senator has a bright future ahead of him.

Kevin Mannix

His tough on crime stance wasn’t tough enough this election cycle to garner a win for any of his ballot measures.

Bill Kennemer

In an infamous year of Democratic takeovers, the popular Republican Clackamas County Commissioner narrowly edges out Dem Toby Forsberg in the battle for Oregon City’s state representative seat.

Oregon Labor Unions

Although they beat all the Mannix/Sizemore initiatives lodged against them, they were forced to spend all their campaign cash in order to do so. They also came very close to losing their gravy train on Measure 64.

Jon Isaacs

He put the gavel in Jeff Merkley’s hand back in 2006 and now elected the same boss to the United States Senate. Life is good for this top political operative.

Mike Erickson

A regular on the Losers list, he lost again on his second time around running for Oregon’s fifth congressional district. Perhaps he should stick to the shipping industry.

Lisa Grove

Oregon’s top political pollster got it so right in so many races, most importantly the Merkley race. Now, which gubernatorial candidate will she pick for 2010? Hmm.

John Lim

The longest serving member of the Oregon Legislature was drowned out of office by the blue tide of Democratic voters on Tuesday. It’s never fun to be forced into retirement.

Hardy Myers and John Kroger

Oregon’s sitting Attorney General appointed the Attorney General-Elect as a Special Assistant Attorney General in an effort to organize a smooth transition before the next legislative session begins. Here’s to working together.

Democratic Party of Oregon

They hired security guards to keep unticketed (or the unchosen to some) out of their big election night party and ended up keeping out a very prominent donor.

Chris Telfer

The newest Republican to the Oregon Senate easily won the seat formerly held by Democrat Ben Westlund.

Toby Forsberg

Even when he loses he still wins. After losing to Bill Kennemer for state representative it looks like Forsberg will be appointed to state Senator Kurt Schrader’s vacant seat.
